How to Play — full rules
Room System (2v2 with friends)
- Click Room System.
- Create a room and share the 6-letter code, OR enter a code to join.
- Both players click Ready — the match starts automatically.
- Want a themed round? Create a Custom Pack of your own items.
Party Mode (4-8 players)
- Click Party Mode.
- Create a room, join with a code, OR hit Join Random Server.
- Wait until 4-8 players are in, then everyone clicks Ready.
- One player is chosen as the secret holder and given an item.
- Everyone else asks questions in join order across 2 rounds.
- The holder answers yes/no — and can lie at any point.
- Anyone can attempt a guess at any time.
The lying mechanic
- The secret holder may answer truthfully or strategically lie.
- Lie and never get guessed → +60 points (Evil Genius bonus).
- Lie and get caught → −10 points penalty.
Scoring
- 1st correct guess: +50
- 2nd: +30 · 3rd: +20 · later: +10
- Holder defended (told truth, not guessed): +50
- Holder guessed (told truth): +25
- Lie bonus / penalty: +60 / −10

How does the lying mechanic work?
When you're the secret holder, you can choose to answer truthfully or lie. If you lie and no one catches you, you get +60 points. If you get caught, you lose -10 points. Strategic lying adds a whole new layer of depth to the classic deduction game.
How many players can play?
Party Mode supports 4-8 players. Room System supports 2v2 matches. Bot Mode is single-player. There's a mode for every group size.
Is GuessIt really free?
Yes, GuessIt is completely free to play. No accounts, no downloads, no hidden costs. Just open your browser, enter a name, and start playing with friends.
What is a Custom Pack?
Custom Packs let you create your own word lists for the game. Add 10-20 items like your favorite movies, inside jokes, or custom categories. You can create up to 2 packs and use them in Room and Party modes.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes, GuessIt is fully responsive and works on all devices including phones, tablets, and desktops. No app download needed.
Do I need to create an account?
No, accounts are optional. Just enter a name and start playing. Your game progress and stats are stored locally in your browser.
Can I play with friends?
Yes! Room System lets you create a private room with a 6-letter code. Share the code with friends and they can join instantly. Party Mode supports 4-8 players for larger groups.
What are the game packs?
GuessIt comes with 5 default packs: Countries, Animals, Food, Movies, and Random. Each pack has 20+ items. You can also create Custom Packs with your own words.
How does scoring work?
1st correct guess: +50 points. 2nd: +30. 3rd: +20. Later: +10. The secret holder gets +50 if not guessed, +25 if guessed. Lying bonus is +60, penalty is -10.
What is Bot Mode?
Bot Mode lets you practice against AI opponents. Choose from Easy, Normal, or Hard difficulty. Perfect for learning the game before playing against real players.
Can I change my name?
Yes! Your name is saved locally. You can change it anytime using the name input on the landing page. Your stats will carry over.
What happens if I leave mid-game?
If you leave mid-game, the match ends. The remaining player wins by default. We recommend playing with friends or stable internet for the best experience.
Are there different difficulty levels?
Bot Mode has Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties. The AI plays differently at each level. Hard mode AI is very strategic and rarely makes mistakes.
How to create a Custom Pack?
In Room or Party Mode, click "Create Custom Pack" in the pack picker. Enter a pack name, description, and 10-20 items (one per line). Click Save. You can create up to 2 packs.
Can other players see my Custom Packs?
No, Custom Packs are private to you. Only you can select them when creating a room. Other players will see the items when playing, but they won't have access to your pack list.
Is there voice chat?
Currently, GuessIt does not have built-in voice chat. Players can use third-party apps like Discord for voice while playing the game in their browser.
How to report a bug?
You can report bugs via the Contact page or join our Discord community. We actively fix reported bugs and appreciate your feedback.
Is there a limit to Custom Packs?
Each player can create up to 2 Custom Packs. This limit ensures fair play and prevents spam. If you need more, reach out to us—we're always open to feedback.
Does GuessIt work offline?
GuessIt requires an internet connection to play. The game uses Supabase for real-time multiplayer and data storage. However, Bot Mode works with minimal internet after loading.
